Students must excel in the classroom in order to become productive STEM graduates and take their place in the workforce.
There are many issues that affect classroom performance. These include student preparation, study skills, time management issues, and the student’s ability to master the fundamentals and subtleties of the course material. Many interventions have been initiated to address these performance issues, focusing largely on tutorial assistance and enhanced study skills.
The possibility of deploying technological means to improve comprehension and material mastery has not received as much attention, largely because of concerns that technology tends to provide an answer without covering the methodical processes by which the answer is obtained. The Technology Plus Presentation will explore means by which technology can be used and comprehension of process improved at the same time.
Two exemplary approaches will be presented:
- The Constellations Center for Computing Equity, as developed by Dr. Kamau Bobb of Georgia Tech University; and
- The WeBWork online Learning Platform, as implemented by Dr. Kenneth Parker of the New York City College of Technology.
