The Conference will begin with a keynote presentation from Dr. Susan Lord, a professor and educational researcher who has conducted extensive research into the issues of Hispanic and underrepresented student retention. Her presentation will cover three areas:
- The nature, size, and importance of the gap between the percentage of Hispanic and underrepresented minorities in general population and their representation in STEM studies and careers;
- Several high-level issues that may account for this gap; and
- Possible reasons why this gap may persist, despite the attention and resources devoted to closing it.
The presentation will frame the central concern of the HSI:Urbano Conference. It will be followed by panels of academicians, employers, and students who will explore the issue and its potential causes in more detail, setting the stage for an exploration of solutions that will take place on the Conference’s second day.
